Nicole Kidman's daughters help celebrate mum's historic first

<p>Nicole Kidman taken to the red carpet with her family in tow for a rare appearance, as Nicole accepted a lifetime achievement award. </p> <p>The Aussie actress was joined by her husband Keith Urban and their two daughters, Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13, who were all dressed to the nines for the occasion.</p> <p>Nicole was also surrounded by her sister Antonia Kidman, brother-in-law Craig Marran and their family for the glitzy event. </p> <p>The 56-year-old actress has now become the first Australian to win the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award, with the award often being dubbed the highest honour in American cinema. </p> <p>The accolade has also been won by the likes of Julie Andrews, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Meryl Streep Morgan Freeman and many other iconic figures in the industry. </p> <p>The Academy Award winner who grew up in Sydney said on social media she was "deeply moved" to receive such a prestigious award. </p> <p>"Thank you to all of you and to the American Film institute for including me in this illustrious group of honorees — now let's have some fun!" she wrote on Instagram. </p> <p>When announcing Kidman as the recipient of the award, AFI released a statement saying, "Both a powerhouse performer, spellbinding movie star and accomplished producer, Nicole Kidman has captured the imaginations of audiences throughout her prolific career, delivering complex and versatile performances on-screen."</p> <p>"She is a force both brave in her choices and bold in each performance. Iconic Star Trek actor dies suddenly at age 73

<p dir="ltr">Iconic <em>Star Trek: Enterprise</em> actor Gary Graham has passed away suddenly at the age of 73. </p> <p dir="ltr">The actor’s ex-wife Susan Lavelle confirmed the news in an emotional facebook post, sharing their family’s devastation over his death. </p> <p dir="ltr">The family chose not to disclose his cause of death, only writing that his passing was “sudden” and came as a “shock”. </p> <p dir="ltr">“It is with deep profound sadness to say that Gary Graham, my ex-husband, amazing actor and father of our beautiful only child together, Haylee Graham, has passed away today,” Lavelle wrote.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We are completely devastated, especially our daughter Haley. "Beyond excited": Graham Norton announces Aussie TV show

"It's been really hard": Nicole Kidman's Mother's Day heartbreak

David Crosby’s cause of death revealed

<p dir="ltr">Rock legend David Crosby’s cause of death has finally been revealed almost three months after the shocking <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/rock-legend-dies-at-81" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">In the initial statement, Crosby’s wife shared that the music icon passed after “a long illness,” but his former <em>Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young </em>partner, Graham Nash has shared further details.</p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking to <em>Kyle Meredith With… </em>podcast, Nash told him that Crosby was rehearsing just hours before his shock death.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was rehearsing for a show to do in Los Angeles with a full band. After three days of rehearsals, he felt a little sick,” Nash said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“And he'd already had COVID and he had COVID again. And so he went home and decided that he would take a nap, and he never woke up. But he died in his bed and that is fantastic,” he added.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nash also shared his grieving process, and how “astonishing” it was that Crosby lived up to 81 despite battling ill-health, but added his death was still “a shock”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It was kind of like an earthquake, you know? You get the initial shock and then you figure out that you survived. But these aftershocks kept coming up, and they’re diminishing in size as I go along,” Nash said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Crosby had battled with ill-health for many years, after being diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1994 and receiving a liver transplant that same year. In the following years, Crosby was also diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and had to use insulin to keep it under control.</p> <p dir="ltr">Throughout his career the icon had won numerous awards including the Grammy Award for Best New Artist for Crosby, Stills, and Nash. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.</p> <p dir="ltr">Crosby is survived by his wife Jan Dance, his sons Django and James, and his daughters Erika and Donovan.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty</em></p>

Sam Burgess’ major life update

<p>Former South Sydney Rabbitohs star Sam Burgess is reportedly expecting his third child with girlfriend Lucy Graham. </p> <p>As a friend of the family informed <em>Confidential</em>, Lucy’s pregnancy has apparently progressed past the three-month mark, and the couple are said to be “extremely happy.” </p> <p>“Both Sam and Lucy are happy and healthy and excited about their future together,” a representative for Burgess added.</p> <p>The two only went public with their relationship five months prior to the announcement, though it is believed that they had been friends for roughly 20 years beforehand. Both hail from the United Kingdom, with Lucy reportedly having moved to Australia to start a family with Burgess.</p> <p>The 34-year-old is already a father of two - daughter Poppy and son William - with ex-wife Phoebe. The couple parted ways barely a month after William was born, and while they gave their relationship another try in 2019, they split for good before the year was up. </p> <p>In October 2020, allegations of domestic violence - as well as drug use - were made against him by his ex-wife, and he was stood down from his new position as assistant coach. Burgess denied the allegations, and he was cleared after a year-long investigation. </p> <p>And it was only two years later that his new relationship with Lucy made its public debut on the red carpet of friend Russell Crowe’s Poker Face premiere. At the time, Lucy was labelled by tabloids as a “mystery brunette”.</p> <p>They became ‘social media official’ in January 2023, when Burgess appeared in Lucy’s gallery of New Year’s pictures. Sam’s brother George, and his partner Joanna, were also in attendance at the event. </p> <p>Additionally, the pair have been spotted out and about enjoying a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Sydney. </p> <p>Despite their whirlwind romance, a source close to the former rugby league player opened up to <em>The Daily Mail</em>, explaining that Burgess is “mad” about his new partner. </p> <p>“It’s been a whirlwind but she is a fantastic woman. They get along so well. All of his friends are so happy to see how happy he makes her,” they said. </p> <p>“The Burgess are very family oriented and I think there was always a plan to start a family,” they added. “From what I hear, she is genuinely good for him. <p>Lucia Hawley, Nicole Kidman’s niece, has just landed a major presenting role after years of “working towards” a career in TV journalism.</p> <p>Lucia, 24, is also the daughter of TV presenter Antonia Kidman and was announced as the new face of Live From E!, hosting red carpets with stars across the country on the new 7Bravo channel.</p> <p>Despite her celebrity connections, the 24-year-old has expressed she’s “no nepo-baby,” sharing that she has been “working towards" becoming a full-time TV presenter for years.</p> <p>“I am so lucky to have them both as role models — not only are they amazing at their jobs, but they also have a really strong sense of self and are very intellectual as well,” She told the <a href="https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/lucia-hawley-says-shes-lucky-to-have-mum-antonia-and-aunt-nicole-kidman-as-role-models/news-story/b83c3b48554c9b69f630aff63007d212" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Telegraph</a>, referring to her mum and aunt.</p> <p>“Having a mum who had been in the industry, through osmosis you gain that perspective and understanding and I think that’s been one of the biggest things that has helped in preparing me for this role, just having watched her and how she has carried herself through everything.</p> <p>“This is honestly like a dream come true. <p>Richard Wilkins has shared priceless insights into the backstage experience of Sir Elton John’s final Australian tour after attending the music legend’s concert in Newcastle – and he even ran into a few more rock celebrities while meeting the man himself.  </p> <p>Wilkins had the privilege of catching up with Elton in person, after Elton launched the Australian leg of the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Farewell Tour in Newcastle, and the Today entertainment editor reported that he "absolutely delivered in spades".</p> <p>"To witness Elton John in concert is to witness an absolute masterclass in stadium entertainment and rock and roll - witnessing a legend at the top of his game," said Wilkins on the Today segment.</p> <p>And Wilkins wasn't alone backstage when it came to rubbing shoulders with the rock and roll royalty; <p dir="ltr">The real reason for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s return to Australia has been revealed.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Aussie lovebirds and their daughters Sunday, 14, and Faith, 11, landed Down Under in time for Christmas to spend some quality time with their mothers.</p> <p dir="ltr">"My mum just turned 80 and Nic’s mum … who knows how many Christmases we get with anybody ever, but particularly with our mums,” Keith told <a href="https://www.newidea.com.au/nicole-kidman-mum-janelle-sick" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New Idea</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">“[We] really cherish that chance to spend Chrissy with [our mums] and our family in Australia,” he added after mentioning the loss of their fathers in the last few years.</p> <p dir="ltr">During Nicole’s last visit to Australia at the start of 2022, she revealed that her mother Janelle, now 82, was unwell.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We’re here primarily to take care of my mother and to have her surrounded by her grandchildren,” Nicole said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“She has every brain faculty available, so she hasn’t lost anything. <p>Nicole Kidman has come under fire for failing to speak out against luxury fashion brand Balenciaga, with many calling for the actress to be "cancelled" over her silence. </p> <p>The big-name brand is under intense scrutiny after releasing a series of photographs showing children holding stuffed animals dressed in bondage gear to promote their new collection. </p> <p>Another image shows a hidden document referencing a real-life court case about child pornography.</p> <p>As the images began to go viral on social media, Balenciaga was accused of promoting the sexualisation of children and “child abuse”.</p> <p>Nicole Kidman has a long history of working with the brand, and stars in the luxury Spring 2023 fashion campaign.</p> <p>Other celebrities associated with the brand, such as Kim Kardashian, have spoken out in protest against Balenciaga, expressing their "disgust and outrage" over the campaign images. </p> <p>Kidman posted images of her Spring ‘23 campaign with Balenciaga to her Instagram account on November 22, around the time the controversial promo pictures were released, and has provided no comment on the controversy.</p> <p>That silence has registered with her fans, many of whom took to the comments section beneath her post.</p> <p>“Shame on you,” one user wrote.</p> <p>“Silence is deafening. “That is what makes him a predator”: Graham Norton names worst ever guest

<p>Graham Norton has called out his "least favourite guest" on his long-running talk show in his new tell-all book. </p> <p>The BBC presenter was on a book tour for his new memoir <em>Forever Home</em> in his native Dublin when he opened up about the star's "chilling" behaviour before he even arrived on set. </p> <p>Two years before the avalanche of allegations about convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein came to light in 2017, he appeared on Graham's famous red sofa. </p> <p>He joined<em> Doctor Who</em> actor David Tennant, Oscar winner Olivia Colman and singer Jessie J in 2015. </p> <p>“I often talk around who my least favourite guest was, but someone reminded me, I have a really good answer to this now,” Norton said, according to Irish news outlet <a title="www.joe.ie" href="https://www.joe.ie/movies-tv/graham-norton-worst-guest-756066?fbclid=IwAR16hRsekgbR7OCKoYxJMIzG08n1nkAKcuASfa4ErXuXOpByUu3Y0X3WXeE">Joe</a>.</p> <p>“And actually, it was weird, because he asked for my e-mail. Cash is not king when it comes to super

<p>Record low interest rates are shrinking financial returns for conservative fund members.</p> <p>Regardless of whether your nest egg is self-managed or in a retail or industry super fund, if it’s mainly been sitting in cash you’ve missed out on healthy returns delivered by diversification.</p> <p>Five years ago, seven per cent term deposits were offered. But this is no longer the case. Many experts expect slim cash returns for a long time. Recently, deposits pay only two-and-a-half per cent.</p> <p>The fast-growing self-managed superannuation sector seems to be hit the hardest by the cash crash as members usually make their own investment decisions. Those who don’t use SMSFs should also check that cash does not dominate their savings. Most will already have a diverse range on investments through their fund’s default investment options.</p> <p>In Australia, we have almost 550 million SMSFs with more than one million members. According to official figures, they hold about 28 per cent of their money in cash. Typical retail and industry super funds hold 14 per cent of their money in cash.</p> <p>International shares, which is a top-performing asset class over the last five years, represents less than one per cent of SMSF assets compared with 22 per cent for other funds. </p> <p>Barbara Smith, CEO of Oasis Wealth and author of new book Keep it Super Simple, says that cash returns were nice for those who locked money in term deposits five years ago. But record low interest rates today mean now is not the time to do it again.</p> <p>“Our experience is sometimes people get scared and just leave it sitting in cash,” she says.</p> <p>“Now that rates have fallen, people are being a little proactive.”</p> <p>She says that people need to do their research and “always keep yourself close to your money.”</p> <p>Online share trading websites such as CommSec have more information than they’ve had before, Smith says.</p> <p>“The worst thing people do is invest in things they don’t understand. Once they do that you can start to see the money drizzle away. Take it slowly and gradually invest.”</p> <p>Andrea Slattery, CEO of the SMSE Association, says that the claim that SMSFs invest mainly in cash is incorrect. She says they get a lot of international exposure via investing in Aussie companies with big offshore earnings, like BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Westfield.</p> <p>“SMSFs are more flexible and leading the market in moving into new investments,” she says.</p> <p>“In the main, people are more engaged, they trust their specialist adviser and are more comfortable with the decisions that have been made.</p> <p>“You can’t actually do everything yourself – there are a couple of compulsory advisers you need – one’s an auditor and one’s an actuary. Man accused of shooting family of four identified

<p dir="ltr">The accused shooter who <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/news/news/three-confirmed-dead-after-horrific-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed two farmers and their son</a> and wounded the other has been identified.</p> <p dir="ltr">Darryl Young has been charged with the murder of his neighbours Mervyn, 71, Maree Schwarz, 59, and their son Graham Tighe, 35, following a dispute of boundary lines on their land in Bogie near Collinsville in Queensland.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 59-year-old was also charged with one count of attempted murder after Mervyn and Maree’s other son Ross Tighe survived following a gunshot wound to the abdomen.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police will allege Young invited the three members to the edge of his property on August 4 before shooting them “execution style”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Young allegedly shot at Ross who managed to escape the farm in a ute and alert police to the horrific attack against his family.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police charged Young with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder and he is due to appear at Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday.</p> <p dir="ltr">Acting Superintendent Tom Armitt said it was incredible Ross was able to survive due to the properties being so far apart.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It’s actually a 45-minute drive between the neighbours,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“At the crime scene, which is at the front gate of one of the premises, it is a 3km drive between the gate and the house at that location.”</p> <p dir="ltr">In another devastating twist of events, Graham’s wife Lucy had just given birth to their second child.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It’s just devastating shock that things can happen so quickly in the blink of an eye and ruin so many lives so quickly,” Greg Austen, Graham’s uncle told 7News.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: 7News</em></p>

Three confirmed dead after horrific shooting

<p dir="ltr">A person who allegedly shot four people, killing three of them, is in police custody. </p> <p dir="ltr">Mervyn and Maree Schwarz and her sons Graham Tighe and Ross Tighe were the target of a horrific shooting at a rural property in Bogie near Collinsville in Queensland on Thursday morning.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mervyn, Maree and Graham have been confirmed dead, while Ross remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital due to a gunshot wound to the abdomen.</p> <p dir="ltr">Queensland Police confirmed on Friday morning “the person who has been nominated as the alleged gunman is with us here in custody”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We haven’t pressed any charges at this point in time while our investigations are ongoing,” Mackay District Superintendent Tom Armitt said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police are currently speaking to five people to help establish the events of the devastating attack. </p> <p dir="ltr">They commended Ross for his bravery after fleeing the scene with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and walking “many kilometres” to alert police.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We believe that the male was able to extract himself from the area when he was spoken to by a police officer many, many kilometres away from the crime scene,” Superintendent Armitt continued.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was fleeing from the scene…he was able to tell police that he had been shot and three others (were) also shot.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Ross was able to speak to police on Thursday, and will once again be asked more questions on Friday in relation to what happened.</p> <p dir="ltr">Superintendent Armitt confirmed that all involved were neighbours and that “some conversation has occurred” before the shooting. </p> <p dir="ltr">“(This) resulted in a meeting up of the parties at the boundary line in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday) morning when the incident occurred,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Detectives have declared several crimes scenes in the area and forensics will conduct examinations.</p> <p dir="ltr">There is no ongoing danger to the public. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: 7News</em></p>

The Northman reviewed

<p dir="ltr"><em>The Northman</em> is a dark and gritty retelling of a Nordic legend that is packed with violence, themes of the supernatural and, even, incest.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth is the son of a Viking king who witnesses his uncle murder his father and seize the crown for himself.</p> <p dir="ltr">His mother is taken prisoner and Amleth barely manages to escape with his life. He flees on a rowboat and vows to avenge his father and rescue his mother.</p> <p dir="ltr">Aleksander Skarsgard plays a much-older Amleth who has become, years later, a cold- blooded warrior.</p> <p dir="ltr">He dances around campfires wearing a wolf headdress, leads raiding parties against villages and slaughters soldiers and defenceless townsfolk alike.</p> <p dir="ltr">One thing has remained unchanged: his lust for revenge.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth is rounding up the captives from his latest raid when he overhears his uncle has been overthrown and exiled to Iceland.</p> <p dir="ltr">The prisoners are to be shipped over to him and Amleth plots his revenge: he will disguise himself as a slave, travel with the captives on the boat, and kill his uncle.</p> <p dir="ltr">Plenty more bloodshed follows as Amleth carries out his plan.</p> <p dir="ltr">Heads are bashed in, arms are hacked off and, in one scene, limbs are rearranged in the shape of a horse.</p> <p dir="ltr">The film spirals into the realm of the weird with the episodes of violence broken up by pagan orgies, incest and Norse mythology.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth fights a sword-wielding skeleton, consults a shaman who prophesies through a decapitated head and rides a horse through the sky towards Valhalla.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth’s mother trying to seduce her son is the scene that really takes this film into disturbing territory.</p> <p dir="ltr">Director Robert Eggers has clearly intended to move away from the glamourised portrayal of Viking culture we have seen in TV shows like ‘Vikings’.</p> <p dir="ltr">Surprisingly, the brutality and rawness are the perfect ingredients that make an enjoyable film.</p> <p dir="ltr">There is not a dull moment in the 2 hour and 17-minute-long runtime and Eggers proves why he may be the next best emerging director.</p> <p dir="ltr">If there’s one pitfall in the film it’s that Amleth had several chances to kill his uncle but, for some reason, didn’t do it.</p> <p dir="ltr">The film feels like it could have ended five different ways, before it finally does.</p> <p dir="ltr">That being said, the final battle between Amleth and his uncle is nothing short of epic. </p> <p dir="ltr">If you have a stomach made of iron then this is a film definitely worth watching. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em><strong>Written by Aidan Wondracz.</strong></em></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: YouTube </em></p>
